I firmly believe that you can grow as a human being and make positive changes in your life. I also know that if you are feeling overwhelmed by your situation or drowning in pain, it may be difficult for you to imagine how things might be different. During this transition time of intense emotions, self-doubt, or concern about others, I will be there to understand your despair and support you as you begin to explore the nature of the challenge and possibilities for change.

Both research and my experience have taught me that the most important ingredient in successful therapy is the relationship between the client and the therapist. For therapy to be successful, we must co-create a place of honesty, warmth, respect, trust, caring, and even humor. I strive to do my part in this by being fully present to you, empathic, and non-judgmental. I will always welcome your on-going feedback and will offer you feedback as well. As you speak openly and honestly about your feelings and your thoughts and dreams, my role will be to listen and help you see the patterns and metaphors, which allow you to know yourself more clearly. This experience will help you find resolution to difficulties and conflicts using your strengths to improve your life.

My theoretical orientation has been influenced by training in insight-based therapy, systems therapy, and cognitive therapy. What you will most readily observe in our work together is an active, supportive interpersonal style. We may explore how earlier experiences in your life are influencing your current experience and what coping strategies you learned in the past that may or may not be helpful in your current situation. We will look at what other choices might also serve you well. I believe that emotional well-being is about having as many choices as possible.

In couples and family therapy I focus more on the relationships between people than on the individuals. I attempt to take a neutral stance, helping people to understand each other and how they might best communicate and meet each other’s needs. In all of my work with individuals, couples, or families, my goal is to help you leave therapy having made positive changes in your life that serve your needs and dreams. It is always an honor to be a part of that process.
